Jobs & business
Job creation
According to research undertaken by the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, unemployment in the Earls Court Project Area and on the West Kensington and Gibbs Green housing estates is currently double the national average and the number of long-term unemployed is three times the national average. We’d like to change that.
The Earls Court Project would create thousands of new jobs for people with all kinds of skills and we would insist on construction companies and new businesses in the area hiring local residents for a percentage of certain types of positions. Your commute to work could be a short stroll or cycle ride through landscaped squares and gardens.
Work space
Office rental rates in London’s West End are amongst the highest in the world as there’s simply not enough office space to meet demand. The Earls Court Project will be mainly residential, but by including state-of-the-art new office space in the development, we’ll be attracting businesses from the centre of the city. Imagine all the job opportunities that could come from British and international businesses in the fields of telecoms, IT and multi-media moving into the area. Plus there would be a need to staff the restaurants, clubs, shops and cultural facilities we have planned to service these businesses.
Training
We’d also like to introduce training programmes for local people similar to the outreach schemes set up during the construction of ExCel and Heathrow’s Terminal 5. The British Airport Authority, for example, invested £150,000 a year for a decade in construction training programmes at further education colleges near to Terminal 5 as it was being built. It also developed special courses in airport operations for local schools to provide opportunities for school-leavers once the terminal was built.
