I’d love to see independent fashion designers, arts & crafts workers, salvage specialists and antiques dealers being invited to the area. There’s no point just shoving more chain shops (already plenty of them) but unique boutique style shops would really add the the sense of community and create a shopping area that would attract both locals and beyond. Get Mary Portas on board so we can have proper green grocers etc! |

Hi Hannah, thank you for your comment, you make a very interesting point. We are eager to create a vibrant, high-quality, unique area in London which will offer plenty of diversity in terms of shops, green spaces and public realm. A key aspect of our vision is to create a 21st century high street connecting Earls Court and North End Road running east west across the development. It will be a street of activity and vibrancy, with retail serving local people as well as attracting visitors from the wider London area. We envision the high street to serve as a centre for the community and the arts, which will include cafes, restaurants and pleasant public spaces to provide places to relax and enjoy. Like you, we would like the Earls Court High Street to feature independent retail. So, we are looking at ways in which the new North End Village could revitalise the whole of the North End Road, including the market, and offer a similar ‘blended’ community feel to that of Fulham Broadway. As part of developing a concept for the ‘Future High Street,’ Capital & Counties have commissioned an independent study to examine how forces of change will impact on high streets in the next century. |

I so agree with Hannah. Let’s avoid having a High St like all the others. Independent shops are much more interesting and characterful. If we want the chains, we can go up to Ken High St. While we’re at it, how about a specialist cooked food market like the one they have in Whitecross St, near the Barbican, on Thursdays and Fridays? There are fantastic stalls selling food of all nationalities that you can either take home or eat on the spot: everything from Thai curries to sliced roast beef on a giant Yorkshire pudding. It would be great as a lunch draw for local workers/residents. |
