Potential traffic and congestion problems

Thousands of new homes and offices will increase traffic exponentially and we need major transport improvements to the Earls Court one-way system to cope. I think you should make the one-way system from the A4 to the Embankment a two-way system and not just make minor improvements to a few junctions. (James Wilson, resident)

Thanks for your suggestions James. Lots of local residents have voiced similar concerns about potential traffic and congestion problems. The landowners of the Earls Court Project area are looking at various ways to improve the one-way system and a recent transport study is being discussed with both boroughs and Transport for London who own the strategic highway network.
We’re fortunate in that Transport for London are one of our development partners and they obviously bring a lot of expertise to the table. Having said that, it won’t be easy as traffic is a problem on many of London’s streets and Earls Court is a gateway to the capital.

We really value your opinions and would like to invite you to come along to our Topic Groups in October when we’ll be unveiling our draft masterplan and consulting with people who live in the area so we can work together towards a final masterplan next year. Please keep an eye out for details on this website or sign up for our newsletters.

I’d also like to voice my concern over the increase in traffic on Earls Court Road/Redcliffe Gardens and Warwick Road/Finborough Road that thousands of extra homes in the area will create. These roads are already heavily congested and local residents have to suffer the detrimental health effects caused by noise and air pollution daily.

I would like to know why Transport for London are not interested in developing the existing rail track corridor under the exhibition centre and along Brompton cemetery into a new traffic conduit from the West Cromwell Road down onto the embankment via Lots Road power station/Chelsea Harbour. The surrounding green spaces of Brompton cemetery and the proposed ‘Lost River Park’ would act as a filter each side for the noise and air pollution and help create a barrier between the traffic and local residents. There is already surplus space alongside the railway tracks through the area already to facilitate a new road. The benefits of a new road for new and existing residents would be immense. I can see that TFL have a conflict of interest being both developers/landowners of the site and a public servant but their duties should be primarily to sort out the traffic in the area rather than line their pockets by developing homes and I view any failure to sort out the already poor traffic situation in the area as negligence on their part.

Transport is potentially the biggest problem with this whole scheme, and it has not been addressed. The major roads around Earl’s Court (Cromwell Road to the north, Old Brompton Road to the south and the famous one-way system) are already clogged, dangerous to cross, noisy and polluting. Earls Court station is already full to bursting during rush hour and the interchange between the District and Piccadilly lines is horrendous. It just takes one of the lifts or the escalator to break down and the whole system comes to a virtual standstill.

This development plan talks about another 7,500 homes, and the 3 types of property will house anything up to 6 people. Let’s take as an average 3 people per dwelling x 7,500 = 22,500 new residents, all needing to get to and from work, to and from schools and hospitals. Not all of them will be cyclists. Our current transport facilities can barely cope with current numbers - how on earth will they cope with these new people?

Thanks for your comments - people who live in the area have voiced similar concerns.

We’re looking at potential issues involving public transport and traffic in great detail and will have answers to all of these questions at our next series of drop-in sessions in June.

I’ll be posting details of where and when these will take place on this website soon.

A major concern should be traffic, noise, pollution and congestion on Earl’s Court road which has already reached its limit. You should urgently consider reducing traffic on Earl’s Court by at a minimum changing the one way system into a two ways system.
